Sunflower seeds: market situation to turn worse

SOFIA/KYIV. Imports from Ukraine are still helping sunflower seed suppliers in Bulgaria to retain moderate prices. This may, however, change quickly if things get worse, especially since suppliers are confronted with serious problems.

Imports balance market

Prices are incredibly low in Bulgaria at present considering the challenges the country is confronted with. Bakery kernels are, for instance, still trading in a firm range of EUR 1.20-1.26/kg DDP Germany. Suppliers maintain that the high import volumes from Ukraine are stabilising the market. Bulgaria, in fact, imported a stunning 259,566 mt of sunflower seeds from Ukraine in the first two months of the current marketing year (July-August) according to the European Commission's Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development (DG AGRI
