Sunflower seeds: rainfall delays harvest

KYIV/SOFIA. Persistent rainfall has further delayed the sunflower seed harvest in Ukraine. Yields remain significantly below last year's levels. This is causing prices to rise again.

Yields remain low

The Ukrainian sunflower seed harvest already started with a considerable delay this year. Last week, unfavourable weather conditions caused further delays; due to persistent rainfall, especially in the west and centre of the country, farmers were unable to continue harvesting as planned. By the end of last week, growers had harvested 3.02 million hectares, which corresponds to about 58.7% of the planted area, and production at that point stood at 5.535 million mt.
