Sunflower seeds: sobering yield forecasts

SOFIA/KYIV. Declining yield forecasts are depressing sentiment in the sunflower seed market. Further adjustments cannot be ruled out when the crops are harvested in the coming weeks.

Official estimates down significantly

Due to the Ukraine war, many large growing countries have increased their acreage of sunflower seeds this year. However, heat and drought are taking their toll on the crops and yields are expected to be well below last year's for the most part. The European Commission has reduced its forecast for the EU crop from 11.14 million mt to 10.48 million mt (-6%), the USDA estimates for EU production are as low as 9.7 million mt.
