Sunflower seeds: surprising EU estimates

BRUSSELS/KYIV. Contrary to expectations the EU Commission has lifted the production estimates for sunflower seeds. Raw seed prices have risen a bit and Ukraine reckons that the grain corridor will remain in place.

Production nearly on par with last year

The EU Commission has surprisingly lifted production estimates for this year. While production estimates still stood at 9.890 million mt at the end of August, the Commission has revised the total EU production estimate upwards by 3.8% to 10.266 million mt in the current report. Production will thereby range less than 1% below last year. Important producing countries such as Romania or Bulgaria will produce more than last year, despite excessively hot weather in summer.
