Sunflower seeds: traders urged to stock up

SOFIA. With raw sunflower seed prices rising in Bulgaria the prices for bakery kernels are currently catching up. Demand is still limited and some companies have even stopped operating. The Russia-Ukraine crisis dominates market sentiments.

Panic and standstill

The high demand for sunflower oil is driving up the prices for raw sunflower seeds in Bulgaria. Prices for black sunflower seeds have risen by BGN 50/mt to BGN 1,250/mt (c. USD 724/mt or EUR 639/mt). Buyers, who initially waited for prices to decline, will have to be very patient now. This also applies to bakery kernels. The Russia-Ukraine crisis has, in addition, made matters worse with traders in Bulgaria reporting that their government has urged them to stock up as Russia has started to invade and a war in the middle of Europe appears inevita
