Sunflower seeds: USDA too upbeat about production in Europe

WASHINGTON, D.C./SOFIA. While the sunflower seed harvest is progressing in Bulgaria, Ukraine and Kazakhstan have exported record volumes in 2023. The USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) is rather upbeat about production in Europe.

Revised forecasts in EU and Ukraine

According to the USDA’s FAS International Production Assessment Division (IPAD) global sunflower seed production will range 6% higher on 2023/2024 than in 2022/2023. Profiting from the aggressive attacks on Ukraine Russia will account for 31% of production, followed by Ukraine with 24% and the EU with 19%. Before Russia’s invasion began in February 2022 Ukraine was the leading producer and supplies 17.500 million mt of sunflower seeds in 2020/2021.
