At the beginning of harvest, prices of milling wheat are expected to move within the range of 0.130 EUR/kg – 0.138 EUR/kg EXW Bulgaria while those of feed wheat in the range of between 0.125 EUR/kg – 0.130 EUR/kg EXW Bulgaria.

The harvesting season is to officially begin this week. However, depending on the regions of the country and, most importantly, because of the recent rains, some farmers will start harvesting their fields later in the month.

Wheat: in the grip of lower prices for the new crop

SOFIA. In the end of last week, purchasing prices of milling wheat ascended to as high as 0.152 EUR/kg EXW Bulgaria while those of feed wheat climbed to 0.145 EUR/kg EXW Bulgaria. These are prices of the old crop from harvest 2016-17, which so far in the season have been doggedly resistant to a further downward fall.

However, during the upcoming harvesting season, farmers expect the market to definitely seek a lower price for the new crop. For comparison, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, the average monthly EXW purchasing price for milling wheat in July 2016 was estimated at 0.130 EUR/kg EXW Bulgaria. Whether with the advance of time, prices of harvest 2017-18 would follow the general upward trend of the previous harvest will depend not only on the quality of the local crop, but also on regional competition, outputs in foreign countries, as well as, short-term and long-term market analyses.

Estimated acreages for harvest

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, at the beginning of the harvesting month, available plots for harvest stood at 1,100,536 ha, which is about 2.7% less than available acreages in 2016; while fallen through arable areas were registered at 187 ha.
