Walnuts: Correction of subjective crop estimates

DALIAN. Last week, the China International Tree Nut Conference took place in Zhuhai, China. In the course of this event, a subjective estimate for the 2018 walnut crop was announced – and it is more than 10% above the previous forecasts released at the World Nuts and Dried Fruit Congress.

Moderate yields
More than 60% of Chinese walnuts are harvested in Xinjiang and Yunnan. Producers expect an above average crop here. In smaller growing regions such as Hebei and Shanxi, however, the crop is estimated to be 30-70% smaller due to frost damage.

Market participants are expecting prices for the new crop to be lower in order to remain competitive. The harvest is set to be in late August/early September.
