With the exception of some orchards in the Central South and Eastern regions, which suffered from frost and heavy storms earlier in the year, the harvest is quite promising.

Walnuts: harvest already started in a few orchards

SOFIA. In some orchards throughout the furthest Northwest region of the country, farmers just started collecting the crop. Usually, these farmers are collecting a variety of the local nut – Izvor 10 while other varieties will be mainly harvested throughout September. As depending on the region, some harvest activities will begin in the end of next month. Generally speaking, throughout the North regions this year – indeed, the Northeast parts of the country, farmers expect to collect manifold outputs.

Where harvest started, walnuts are full and kernels are well matured. Those farmers expect to collect a multi-fold output when compared to harvest 2016-17. In some orchards within the country though – mainly the central and eastern South skirts of the Balkan mountain range, farmers will not even try to collect the nut from trees. Those farmers have already become used to accepting the fact that this year’s output will mirror that of last year – a disaster.

However, weak expected harvests this year are confined to specific areas and not widespread as was the case during the previous season! This year, the country could well rely on its own production although imports are not discounted during the Spring of 2018.
