The bigger farmers are already testing the pulse of the market. Prices start somewhat higher in the beginning of the marketing season.

Walnuts: different regions tell different stories

SOFIA. In the majority of regions throughout the country, the torments from last year’s weak harvest are for no repeat, at all. There, owners of orchards are already collecting a high quality crop, expecting quite a bumper production. The majority of farmers throughout the North regions are set to collect what seems to be the highest output within a period of at least several years. Never before have their orchards been so full of walnuts. Once cracked, the kernel is well-matured and fresh.

However, in some orchards within the Southeast and the majority of orchards in the South skirts of the Balkan mountain range prospects do not look rosy, at all. Farmers will collect a weak harvest, because of adverse weather conditions in May and later in the Summer. Others may not dare even enter the orchards since the expected harvest will not cover the cost of marketing the walnuts.

Prices start high

Although it is early for all farmers throughout the country to set prices – in some orchards, harvest is still underway while in some regions, it has not even started – the biggest factories are already testing the market. Not all calibers are offered yet since more quantities are needed, but soon offers for organic walnuts will become available, as well as for the full caliber spectrum.
