SOFIA. Bio walnuts have always commanded a higher price premium. Since local supply is small while demand is high, farmers do not find it difficult to charge higher prices and get away with it!

BULGARIA. Mass scale harvesting throughout the country is picking up speed. The majority of orchard walnuts throughout the country are conventional although with each subsequent year, more acreages are allocated for the cultivation of organic walnuts.

Walnuts: the wind blows in favor of organic

Organic kernels have always commanded a premium price. At the beginning of the marketing season last year, prices for white halves started at about 10.00 EUR/kg EXW Bulgaria. This year’s prices are expected to hover around this level, as well. Usually, prices prevail firm through Christmas and New Year’s Eve, afterwards, a slow downward trend is observed. However, prices are as high as they are since the country does not face a major foreign competitor of organic walnuts.

On the other hand, conventional walnuts of a Ukrainian origin are common on the domestic market when local harvest is relatively weak, as was the case last season. In October last year, farmers started importing Ukrainian walnuts so that they could maintain their foreign market positions, let alone internal market base. However, the noticeable trend within the last few years is for farmers to orient their long-term cultivation strategies towards the growth of organic walnuts.
