In the majority of regions, farmers will collect a multifold harvest than they usually do during an average year. In some areas though, farmers could well repeat the results of harvest 2016-17.

Walnuts: it is the best of times; it is the worst of times

SOFIA. Overall, the harvest this year will be strong. However, depending on the region of the country, farmers have different stories to tell. Farmers from the overall North regions expect a very strong harvest since trees are heavy of walnuts. Their main concern before harvest is the higher than average temperatures -- forecasted for the whole of August -- that would affect the final stage of developing kernels into well-matured and formed nut meat. Their only recourse now seems to be the forecasted rains during the weekend and occasional showers later in the month.

However, every coin has two sides. Earlier in the season, frost fell over some regions of the country, and as a result farmers expected damages. Yet, the frosts were confined to some mountain regions and did not fall throughout the whole country, as was the case during the previous year. Anyhow, their effects have become apparent. In addition, the heavy storms, accompanied by hails, that hit the country recently, have already affected the overall crop’s harvest in some areas. The impact is really local, but where the heavy storms hit, they did not miss! Such places are usually in higher altitude areas or are predominantly situated south of the central parts of the Balkan mountain range, plus some scattered areas in other regions -- mainly the east parts -- of the country.

Anyhow, foreign buyers should not be concerned, since expectations are for a strong output!
