Barley: prices have reached a plateau

SOFIA. Currently, barley is traded for 0.146 EUR/kg CPT domestic port. Although remaining quantities are small, the current price has stayed stable for approximately a month. According to the Agricultural Ministry, by the end of April, reserves stood at 67,990 mt.

For the past few weeks, small quantities of the crop have been mainly traded on the domestic market because remaining quantities will be enough to satisfy local demand. Since the beginning of the year, the price has fluctuated in the range of 0.151 EUR/kg to 0.138 EUR/kg CPT domestic port.

The table below provides a snapshot of the main parameters of barley harvest 2016-17 and its domestic and foreign development trends.

The majority of exports go to the countries of the European Union (232,311 mt) while to the rest of the world go smaller quantities (141,485 mt). A case in point, since the beginning of the harvesting season till the end of April 2017, via Varna seaport were exported 17,379 mt of the crop. For comparison on a yearly basis, that is a fall of about 87% from exports during harvest 2015-16 via the same trade route.
