Bulgarian wheat: meager quantities left for trade, prices keep at the high end

Sales on green have probably already reached 500mt. A trade quietude of harvest 2016-17 has already taken its grip of the market.

 Wheat: the strong harvest 2016-17 boosted exports

SOFIA. Today, milling wheat and feedstuff wheat are traded for 0,169 EUR/kg and 0.166 EUR/kg CPT domestic port, respectively. According to the Bulgarian Ministry of Agriculture, by the 17.03.2017, remaining quantities for trade amount to 427,860mt.

As seen from the table below, this year’s harvest was stronger than harvest 2015-16, which stood at about 5,012,000mt, while its yield was higher than the average yield from the previous year, which amounted to 4,530kg/ha.

The stronger harvest drove high exports. Since the beginning of harvest 2016-17 till 12.03.2017, only via Varna seaport have been exported 1,538,812mt of wheat, which is about 10,5% higher than exports from harvest 2015-16 via the same trade route. The majority of exports go to countries from the European Union such as Spain, Romania and Italy while to the rest of the world - such as Vietnam and India - go smaller quantities.

Farmers already sell on green

Going into the fourth week of March, farmers are already signing contracts for feedstuff wheat from the upcoming harvest. Currently, feedstuff wheat harvest 2017-18 is sold for 0.142EUR/kg CPT domestic port.
