BUENOS AIRES/NEW DELHI. Crop damage in South America is forcing buyers to look for alternative countries of origin. India appears to be the logical choice.

Rising prices are weighing on demand

Unfavourable weather conditions such as frost have led to a significant decline in chia production in South America this year. As the experts at Chelmer Foods state in their latest report, this resulted in significant crop damage, which is why prices rose sharply. Accordingly, demand for chia seeds from South American countries has declined and many buyers are looking for goods from alternative sources.

Buyers turn to India

In addition to Argentina, Peru and Bolivia, chia is mainly grown in India. To meet their needs for 2026, numerous traders and processors are therefore turning to suppliers from the South Asian country. However, buyers should note that chia seeds from India may have a higher ash content. This could be a problem when importing into countries with strict food safety guidelines.

In response to these concerns, some Indian packaging companies have begun offering chia seeds with a guaranteed lower ash content. According to Chelmer Foods, this appears to be a strategic move to attract buyers from regulated markets and establish Indian chia as a viable alternative in light of supply problems in South America.

New crop from the end of October

The first shipments of the 2025 chia crop in South America are expected to arrive in European ports at the end of October. However, according to Chelmer Foods, only a few suppliers have met their forward contracts. Supply is therefore likely to remain tight and the market situation is unlikely to ease.

Indian chia seeds are trading at USD 2,750-3,030/mt FOB India, depending on quality and supplier. Conventional black chia seeds from South America, meanwhile, are quoted at USD 3,100/mt FOB, and organic chia from Argentina is available for USD 3,700/mt FOB. In July 2025, offers for EU-quality black chia seeds from this year's crop were still at USD 2,650/mt FOB Buenos Aires.
