Chia seeds: season fraught with challenges

ASUNCIÓN. As yields dropped to shockingly low levels for chia seeds in South America, the new season started off with a shock for the market. Silver lining is that things may change in December.

Shockingly low yields

Lower yields came as a shock to the market in Paraguay in July. Trouble is that although the area under cultivation increased sharply to around 150,000-180,000 ha, weather conditions were initially promising and quality was anticipated to be good, hot and dry weather coupled with delayed rains caused yields to drop to a devastatingly low 200 kg/ha, whereas they previously stood at 700 kg/ha.
