Domestic trade activities support the price

Current EXW prices are lower than what they used to be a month and two ago, but quite higher when compared to that time last season. Exports could further support the price.

Beginning of June 2017, released data by the Ministry of Agriculture shows sown acreages of corn to amount to approximately 411,519 ha. By the same time last year, farmers sowed area of about 415,873 ha. Geographically, the great majority of the output comes from the North regions, with the Northwest region leading among the rest.

Corn: summer weather conditions will be key to future output

SOFIA. Last year’s summer droughts led to a weak yield of the crop, confining it to an aggregate estimate of about 5.47 mt/ha, not much different from that of the previous year. For comparison, during harvest 2014-15, average national yield was estimated at approximately 7.7 mt/ha.

Trade developments

For the last months, corn has been mainly traded on the domestic market while exports have been sluggish at best. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, by the end of last week, remaining stocks stood at 971,441 mt.

For the price to remain firm, going into the summer, higher trading activity is required. The average purchasing price for May 2017 was 0.152 EXW/kg Bulgaria while that of May 2016 was 0.135 EUR/kg EXW Bulgaria.
