Raisins: Iran fails to compete with Turkey

TEHRAN. The Agricultural Organization of Khorasan Razavi Province estimates grape production above 346,000 mt, of which as much as 75% are processed into raisins. Packaging is a massive challenge. Problem is that the wrong bags create large volumes of waste, which puts Iran at a disadvantage in competing with Turkey.

High waste due to packaging

The raisin production hubs in Khorasan Razavi are the three cities of Kashmar, Khalilabad and Bardeskan, which account for 58% of production in the province. These three cities jointly produce 346,455 mt of grapes, of which around 25% (87,000 mt) are consumed fresh and as much as 75% (260,000 mt) are processed into raisins. Since 4 kg of grapes are required to produce 1 kg of raisins, raisin production can be estimated at 64,960 mt in the three cities and at 112,000 mt in the entire province.
