LIMA. Favoured by the significantly better production result, quinoa exports from Peru increased significantly again this year. But it was not only Peruvian traders who were able to increase their shipments to the EU.

November exports up by 5%

Larger acreages and more favourable weather conditions this year ensured that quinoa production in Peru increased significantly compared to last year. Most recently, the 2024 crop was estimated at 110,000 mt, while last year's result was only 70,336 mt.

Exports from Peru have also developed correspondingly well in recent months. According to fresh fruit, around 5,064 mt of quinoa worth USD 11.7 million were exported from Peru in November 2024, with an average export price of USD 2.31/kg. In the same month last year, exports totalled 4,823 mt worth USD 11.36 million, while the average export price was USD 2.36/kg.

At 3,476 mt, white quinoa accounted for 69% of exports, red quinoa made up 14% or 750 mt and a further 631 mt (12%) was of the mixed variety quinoa tricolore. Over a third of total exports went to the USA, which imported 1,701 mt of quinoa worth USD 4.1 million; other important buyer countries were Canada (394 mt worth USD 838,000) and the UK (304 mt worth USD 696,000).

Quinoa prices on the Indian market have fallen significantly in recent weeks. While they were still at USD 871/mt FOB India in mid-October, they are currently quoted at USD 801/mt FOB.

EU imports up by a good third

In the first five and a half months of the 2024/2025 season (1 July to 16 December 2024), a total of 10,770 mt of quinoa was imported into the EU from third countries, representing a year-on-year increase of 35.8%. Shipments from Peru rose by 47.4% to 5,352 mt, while shipments from Bolivia and India also increased by 10.2% to 4,476 mt and 1,040.9% to 502 mt respectively. There was also an increase in imports from Morocco and Canada. The main importers in the EU were Germany (+21.5% to 2,540 mt), the Netherlands (+42.2% to 1,820 mt) and Spain (+115.8% to 1,500 mt).
