Rice: Over all exports will also increase during year 2017

Demand for Indian Basmati rises, 32% increase in exports

In the Gulf countries, the demand for Indian basmati rice is continuously increasing, due to this, the country has seen a jump of about 32 per cent in the export of basmati rice this year. In the first quarter of the financial year 2018, Indian basmati rice exports saw an increase of 32 percent. This information has been given in a report here. In a report, credential agency ICRA said in a report that the export of Indian basmati rice has returned rapidly and exports in the first quarter of the current financial year increased by 32 percent. During April-June, the total export of basmati rice amounted to US$1267.08 million from the country, whereas in the first quarter of the financial year 2017, the country had exported US$959.68 million.

Commenting on this trend of the market, ICRA's deputy vice-president Deepak Jotwani said: "The export of basmati rice in the current financial year has been encouraging, with the special reason for Iran to increase demand. The countries of West Asia are the largest importer countries and there are reasons for huge fluctuation in demand. During the April-June period, 12,56,982 tonnes of basmati rice has been exported from the country, out of which 5,14,229 tonnes of Iranian alone have been purchased. Apart from Iran, 1,63,462 tonnes of Saudi Arabia and 1,44,972 tonnes have been purchased by Iraq.

During the current season, the principal basmati producing states of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana have been experiencing a shortage of rainfall during the last year's monsoon session till mid-September 2017, whereas water level in the reservoirs in Uttar Pradesh is low. It has been stated in the report that in view of the high prices of paddy in the last purchase season and the possibility of prices being strengthened in the forthcoming procurement season, there is hope for an increase in the average receipts from exports in 2018. Jotwani said that as a result, the receipt of export from the export is expected to be US$4031 million in the year, which will show a 21 percent increase over the year 2017.
