Findings in Mesopotamia dating back more than 4,000 years indicate that sesame is one of the oldest oil plants in the world. The plant originates from India and parts of Africa. Its seeds are crushed into oil or roasted and used to season food or to add flavour to bakery products. They are also used to make halva (ground sesame seeds with sugar and honey) and tahini (sesame paste). Sesame bars, consisting of sesame seeds and sugar or honey, are also a popular snack.
