FRANKFURT. The sunflower was already grown on the American continent, particularly in the Mississippi region and in Mexico City, 2,500 BC. Incas are said to have worshipped the yellow flower as a portrayal of their god. And the sunflower was a popular motive for Van Gogh.
The plant was brought to Europe in the middle of the 16th century by Spanish sailors. Initially utilized as an ornamental plant, sunflower seed kernels were used as bakery products starting in the 17th century. The roasted kernels partially also served as a replacement for coffee and drinking chocol
