MANILA. At the moment there is a tense silence on the coconut markets, as the traders are insecure and hardly make any purchases. Production has not yet been significantly affected.

Prices decline noticeably

The effects of the corona pandemic are also clearly felt on the coconut market. The Philippines, already badly hit by natural disasters, are facing numerous difficulties, as reported by experts from TM Duché. So far, the production of desiccated coconuts continues mainly unaffected, but demand is declining due to the uncertainties in all markets and prices have fallen by about 10% at origin within a week. In the European spot market, desiccated coconuts, medium, low fat are currently trading at EUR 1,445 per metric tonne.

Hardly any trading activities

The situation on the markets is also unlikely to change too quickly, as traders keep their activities to a minimum, hoping to get some clarity soon. It is particularly questionable what impact the spread of the virus will have on the coming quarters. Now that the situation in China is reportedly calming down and new infections have declined significantly according to official statements, the Philippines could at least see some relief in terms of transport problems. The country obtains a large proportion of the containers it uses to export its coconut products from China.
