SOFIA. Competitive prices unfreeze export activities. On a year-to-year basis, exports lag behind.

BULGARIA. So far in the marketing season, farmers have already emptied their storage facilities of the crop, freeing up space for sunflower and corn; the harvest of the latter grain is still underway.

Rapeseed: exports are what make the difference between a success and a failure

Every year, the great majority of rapeseed is exported, as the majority of shipments abroad go to EU member countries – Belgium, France and Germany among others.  As a result of the export-oriented crop, prices of locally grown rapeseed are quite dependent on regional market forces.

So far in the marketing season, exports have lagged on a year-to-year basis. By the 16th of September 2016, exports accounted to 357,743 mt while by the 15th of September 2017, shipped volumes abroad reached 263,828 mt, as close to 92% went to EU markets. By the end of last week, sea exports are down by 26.5%, reaching 133,597 mt.

If only prices were higher …

The higher the price, the less competitive the crop is on the international market. Since the beginning of the marketing season, prices of rapeseed have been slowly but surely following a bearish trend. Short-term withdrawals from the market could work out well, even increase the price, but the overall market sentiment is for prices to remain on the ebb side rather than on the upper side during the medium-term.
