Wheat: The EU is expected to become the leading producer in 2017/18

In FAO estimates for 2017/18 China remains a leader in wheat production (not counting the EU). The United States and Canada expect in 2017/18 lower yields, in contrast to Russia, which has ambition to produce the record for the country nearly 84 million MT

 According to the FAO, the world wheat production reached 753 million MT in 2017. Although 7.4 million MT, or 1% less the record production witnessed in 2016, this is the second highest figure ever seen.

The European Union is the largest producer and is set to increase production by 4%, to 150 million MT this year. This is mainly due to France, where favorable weathe also resulted in improved quality. In Germany and Poland, however, heavy rain has had a negative impact on wheat production, FAO experts say.
