Not only has the country been hard hit by drought and extreme heat this year the situation is also compounded by inefficient irrigation systems and unauthorised wells. Estimates state that there are around 400,000 non-licenced wells in the country, over which there is no control. The Iranian Date Association has also issued first estimates on the damage caused by adverse weather conditions for this year’s crop.
