SARVABAD. More than 700 mt of of high-quality organic figs are normally produced in Sarvabad county in Iran’s Kurdistan Province every year. Local agricultural organisations have, however, sounded the alarm bells this year as production is expected to decline to as little as 350 mt due to drought. The harvest season is coming to an end.

Raisins: curious trend

ZANJAN. Iran’s Zanjan Province is a production hotspot for grapes and this year’s production is estimated at 240,000 mt. Only around 10% of the grapes grown here are consumed fresh, the rest are turned into raisins. About 20% of the raisins produced in Zanjan are exported, mainly to Russia. Although harvesting is underway in Iran, the market has taken a rather curious turn.

Pistachios: ambitions run high

DAMGHAN. Although prospects are anything but encouraging for Iran’s pistachio production this year, there are some noted exceptions. In Dangham county in Semnan Province, fresh pistachio production is even expected to rise. Pistachio cultivation has a long tradition in the region dating back more than 1,000 years. The highly ambitious plan is to double production in the next four years.

Although the TMO is purchasing type 9 sultana for TRY 13.00/kg, which is TRY 0.50/kg higher than last year, farmers are highly disappointed. They had expected prices ranging at TRY 16.00/kg for type 9 sultanas. The exporters are also not too happy with the state-run organisation.

Cumin: 60% slump in production

TEHRAN. Recent estimates state that cumin production has slumped by 60% in Iran’s Razavi Khorasan Province due to severe drought and unusually cold weather coupled with an early spring. Rainfall ranges 63% lower than last year this season so far. Temperatures ranged 3.1-0.4C (37.58-32.72F) lower between October 2020 and April 2021 than in the same period in 2019/2020 according to official statistics.

Dates: shifts in production

TEHRAN. Date production is estimated at 230,000 mt in Khuzestan Province this year. Exports of high-quality dates are expected to climb by 5,000 mt on last year to 85,000 mt. Khuzestan is, in fact, Iran’s most important province when it comes to exports. Drought is, however, a challenge.

TEHRAN. Saffron corms are grown in Iran’s South Khorasan Province from early August until late September. Harvesting takes place in in mid-October through to early December. Prospects are not exactly encouraging this year as farmers are not quite as enthusiastic.
